I was furious. Only just controlling my temper I asked her if it was forbidden to smoke outside or whether it was just limited to the restaurant. She said outside was fine as long as it wasn’t on the grounds of the restaurant.

 

What did I do?

 

I’ll tell you exactly what I did. I moved the table we were sat at and placed it on the restaurant boundaries so my colleague was sat within the restaurant boundaries and I was outside. And all because I couldn’t live without my cigarettes for about an hour or so.

 

Then there was the time I was doing a presentation to a client in an office. I’d be in the middle of explaining some important point when I’d stop every five to ten minutes. Why? I had to ‘pop’ outside for my cigarette. And then come back in and apologize profusely before carrying on where I’d left off.

 

What must the potential client have thought? Looking back it was amazing I ever held down my job.

 

I realised my addiction was controlling me - and I needed to do something about it.

 

 And then there were my health problems…

 

 I had a very bad smokers cough. A real hoarse racking cough which any onlooker seeing me almost double up would think I was in severe pain. I was coughing all the time. All over the place.

 

          I’d get up in the morning…and…cough solidly for ten minutes. It felt if I was trying to cough my guts up. And of course once I stopped coughing, what would I do? Light up a cigarette with my trusty Zippo.

 

The worst thing was I felt it was perfectly normal behavior back then.

 

Plus I had chronic bronchitis, frequent coughs and colds in winter and always, too much phlegm. I was always trying to clear my nasal passages. I would be talking to someone and snorting to clear my throat at the same time. When I look back I must have come across as the most ill-mannered person around.

 

The fact of the matter was, my health was a mess. And it was all down to my continued smoking.

 

 And the thing was I was petrified to quit smoking. Deep down I was scared my attempt to quit smoking would end in failure - again. That life wouldn’t be the same. That I’d miss my cigarettes too much. That I wouldn’t be able to enjoy life at all. A party, a night out, a dinner wouldn’t be (couldn’t be) fun without a cigarette in my hands.
